University of Defence

The University of Defence focuses on international cooperation with military and civilian educational institutions and scientific research institutions, mainly in NATO and EU countries. It accepts foreign experts as teachers or researchers. It is involved in the European Initiative for the Exchange of Young Officers (Emilyo) and NATO Defence Education Enhancement Programme (NATO DEEP).
The University of Defence is an internationally recognised centre of educational, research and expert activities in the field of defence and security. While respecting ethical rules and academic liberties, it fosters critical thinking, generates and disseminates the latest knowledge gained through research and development effort, and develops competences essential for the dynamic field of security and defence. The education provided is relevant, flexible and based on interdisciplinary cooperation. The results of the research and development work and expert recommendations correspond to the level of knowledge achieved at both national and international levels.
Established in 2004, the University of Defence is the only military university in the Czech Republic. It was formed by merging three separate military institutions: the Military Technical Academy in Brno (founded in 1951), the Military Medical Academy in Hradec Králové (founded in 1951) and the Military University of Ground Forces in Vyškov (founded in 1972). The University of Defence is dedicated to providing high-quality education, scientific research, and expert activities in the field of security and defence.
The University offers accredited education in Bachelor's, Master's, and Doctoral degree programmes in military-managerial, security-defence, technical, and military-medical fields. It also educates civilian students for the benefit of the national security system, defence and security industry, and public administration. The University of Defence imparts knowledge and skills for the professional growth of individuals and cooperates with foreign universities to obtain international experience through the European Union's Erasmus+ educational programme.
The University of Defence is structured into three main faculties and several specialized institutes and centres. The Faculty of Military Leadership focuses on the education and training of military specialists in management and employment of the armed forces. The Faculty of Military Technology provides education in modern military technologies, while the Military Faculty of Medicine educates and trains military professionals in medical sciences. Additionally, the NBC Defence Institute and the Institute of Intelligence Studies contribute to specialized research and education in their respective fields. The Centre of Security and Military Strategic Studies and the Language Centre support the University's mission through expert activities and language education.
The University of Defence is committed to promoting education, protecting knowledge, and fostering free and critical thinking. It conducts independent scientific research in the fields of science that are important for the defence of the Czech Republic and the fulfilment of its international commitments. The University responds to demands important for the society as a whole by carrying out creative activities necessary for the defence of the Czech Republic. It investigates the defence of the Czech Republic from historical, social, and technical perspectives.
The mission of the University of Defence, as a state-owned military university, is to train military professionals and other university-educated specialists working in the sphere of defence and security of the Czech Republic and in countries to which the Czech Republic has international contractual obligations. Through creative effort, expert activities, and knowledge transfer, the University contributes to the development of capabilities for safeguarding national defence and advancing military education.
